About Nold's Equipment

Nold’s Equipment Inc. is a family owned and operated business from the ground up. When Eric Nold and his wife, Christina started their company in 1998 they started with a single backhoe. Eric operated the equipment and Christina took charge of the company’s office duties. Over the last five years the company has greatly expanded. Nold’s Equipment now owns eight backhoes and employs eight operators along with an office manager and dispatcher to help keep the office running smoothly.

Before starting his own company Eric had over twenty years experience in the underground utility industry working for companies like Homer J. Olsen and Irish Construction where he was a job superintendent. "Eric is the key to the success of the company," Christina explained. "His reputation in the industry was well known when we started the company. His knowledge and vision are the
reasons the company has grown successfully"

The backbone of Nold’s Equipment is currently subcontracting their equipment and operators, however they are also a General Engineering Contractor. "The rental side of the business is going well and Eric is now expanding the business by bidding on jobs as the contractor," said Christina. Nold’s Equipment specializes in heavy utility and production trenching. Time is a big factor in any construction project and Nold’s sets high standards for their operators. While other rentals may trench 400 to 500 feet per day, Nold’s Equipment can easily average about 800
feet per day. This type of production not only speeds construction but cuts cost at the same time. As any contractor can tell you downtime and delays can set already rising construction costs spiraling. Nold’s Equipment will often
guarantee the number of feet to be trenched on a daily basis for specific jobs. "Our company specializes in difficult jobs and all our operators are very experienced," Christina explained. Nearly all of Nold’s operators have over twenty years experience within the underground utility industry. What also sets Nold’s apart from other rental companies is their work policy. When not operating, Nold’s operators will jump in and assist wherever they are needed. "Eric believes that our operators should do whatever is necessary to get a job completed, whether it’s shoveling or laying pipe. Our customers appreciate our work ethic."

A major key to the Nold’s success is their team of equipment operators. Eric handpicked the men working for him. Christina was quick to point out that these employees all took a chance when they came to work for Nold’s Equipment. "All of the opera-ors were working for other companies in the industry when Eric approached them. They all took a big chance leaving their jobs to go to work for a company that was just starting out. They came to
work for Eric because they knew his reputation and believed in him. We are a family owned business and that sense of family extends to the people who work for us as well. From "Aunt Jackie" in the office and "Aunt Renee" as dispatcher to all the operators in the field, the people working for us are not just employees. Our success is due in no small part to their skills and experience. We couldn't’t have done it without them. Our business philosophy is to provide excellent service and be loyal to our customers." Christina pointed out that Nold’s Equipment makes it a policy never to bid on contracting jobs against any of their customers. They use Case Equipment 580SM’s and 590 SM’s. They also provide dump trucks, excavators and loaders. "We provide just about any piece of equipment needed for a job," said Christina. "Our operators are trained in handling a wide variety of equipment." Nold’s obtains most of their equipment from D3 Equipment located in Santa Fe Springs.

Recent jobs that Nold’s Equipment has been involved with include the Port of Los Angeles expansion project, the Playa Vista project and the Alameda Corridor project. In dealing with any project, there is a small margin for error when digging around major utilities. Our operators are very skilled in locating marked as well as unmarked lines. Christina informed me. Being able to ascertain the location of any line, marked or especially unmarked, is a major key to keeping a job running smoothly and without any downtime. On the contracting side of the business
Eric was responsible for the relocation of a couple of light poles at the port of Los Angeles. The poles had become a safety issue with the longshoremen and required being moved to a better location.

In addition to owning and operating a growing business, Eric and Christine are the proud parents of four sons. Andrew, the oldest at fifteen, currently attends St. John Bosco High School where he is active in sports and drama. He also snowboards and races dirt bikes. Anthony, who is thirteen years old, attends St. Cornelius Elementary and enjoys drawing. He also snowboards and races dirt bikes. Five-year old Alexander also attends St. Cornelius and is a budding soccer player and yes, he has trophies to his credit already for racing dirt bikes. Adam, who is two, is busy keeping up with his three older brothers. He recently started riding a quad. "The boys are the future of Nold’s Equipment, " Christina observed.

Prior to Eric starting the family business and Christine working with her husband, she obtained a B.A. in Business from Loyola Marymount University. After graduating Christina worked as a Human Resource Manager for Trend Offset Printing. When the family moved to northern California Christine started her own business as a safety consultant, working with various companies in training of OSHA safety regulations.

I asked Christina where she and her husband saw the business going over the next ten years. "We hope to increase the number of machines we own and hire more operators," she said. "We also want to expand the contracting side of the business as well. We don’t want to grow too fast though. We’re not only about the bottom
line. We want the business to grow along with the people we know. We are very fortunate to have a great group that works with us and we want to continue with that family style of business rather than have the business take over and lose that personal touch we feel we can give a customer." Considering that it has only been five years since Eric and Christina began the business with just a single piece of equipment it would appear that Nold’s Equipment, Inc. is a company to watch as their success and reputation continue to grow in California.
